Woman TOTALS Brand New Porsche before DWI Arrest in Verona, New Jersey

Around 1:15 AM on November 6, 2022, Officer Maguire, Officer McMahon, and Lieutenant Condorelli from the Verona Police Department were dispatched to the site of a motor vehicle accident on Grove Avenue. Upon arrival, officers noticed that a 2022 Porsche had struck the back of a parked 2019 GMC pickup truck, which would later be confirmed by footage from the doorbell camera in front of the residence. Officers noticed that the driver, 30-year-old Kruti Shah, was sitting nearby on the curb in a state of apparent intoxication. She told them that she was coming from the Verona Inn and that she was hearing home to Cedar Grove.

While the officers suspected that Kruti was intoxicated, they waited for EMS to evaluate her before performing field sobriety tests. After EMTs from the Verona Rescue Squad arrived to evaluate Kruti, she vomited in their ambulance rig. She declined further medical attention and refused to go to the hospital. Once she was cleared by the EMTs, Officer McMahon proceeded to administer the field sobriety exercises.

The first exercise involved the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, where Officer McMahon observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees in both eyes. The next exercise involved the Walk and Turn test. Kruti was unable to comprehend the instructions provided by the officer, and she lost her balance on several occasions while attempting to place herself in the starting position. Based on the officer’s safety concerns, the continuation of the tests was terminated and Kruti was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

She was transported to Verona Township Police HQ, where she waived her Miranda rights and agreed to provide breath samples. The Alcotest result indicated a BAC of 0.20%, which is more than double the legal limit. At one point she had to be handcuffed to the chair, and she even attempted to game the breathalyzer test repeatedly. After Kruti was processed at police HQ, she was released to her brother after he signed the Potential Liability Warning form on hear behalf. She was issued the following summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, and obstructing passage of other vehicles. Court records indicate that on January 18, 2023, Kruti was found guilty of reckless driving, while the citations for careless driving, traffic on marked lanes, and obstructing passage of other vehicles were dismissed.
