"What makes you think I want someone to be in love with me?" Oh so feisty!! MGM Studios has unveiled the second trailer for the love triangle tennis film titled Challengers, the latest feature from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (of I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All). Now set for release in April. "The art of seduction and other games." After a losing streak, the wife and coach of a Grand Slam champion signs him up for Challenger event where he will face off against her former lover – and his former competitor. The main cast includes Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist as the trio at the center of this lovers' quarrel, along with A.J. Lister and Jake Jensen. This was originally set to open in September last year after a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. But the release & premiere were cancelled because of the actors' strike. It was expected that the film would next show up at Sundance or Berlinale instead, though it isn't at either fest. Now it will arrive in theaters this April. Still looking good?

Tennis player turned coach Tashi (Zendaya) has taken her husband, Art (Mike Faist), and transformed him into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a “Challenger” event — close to the lowest level of pro tournament — where he finds himself standing across the net from his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend (Josh O’Connor). Challengers is directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, director the films The Protagonists, Melissa P, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, and Bones and All previously, as well as a few docs including Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams most recently. The screenplay is by Justin Kuritzkes. Produced by Luca Guadagnino and Amy Pascal. This hasn't premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere. MGM will release Guadagnino's Challengers in theaters nationwide starting April 26th, 2024 this spring.
Another 2023 theatrical release gets moved due to the SAG-AFTRA strike as MGM is pushing the Zendaya-led tennis romance Challengers to April 26. The R-rated pic from director Luca Guadagnino was scheduled to open stateside on September 15, working off the heat of its Venice Film Festival opening-night premiere. That world premiere is not happening now.

Disney already braced for both strikes a while ago by making several release-date changes. A24 just pulled Problemista from the August calendar due to SAG-AFTRA strike, and Lionsgate on Thursday pushed White Bird from August 18 to Q4 2023, as well as its Dirty Dancing sequel from February 9 date to summer 2025; that latter pic still in development.
