The film takes place in one of the South American provinces. In front of the Spaniard Diego, three assassins kill his longtime friend Miguel, who was supposed to become governor of the province of New Aragon. Diego promises the dying Miguel that he will avenge his death, but Miguel asks Diego (the best swordsman of the Old World) to swear an oath that the new governor will not shed blood.
Having secured the governor's ring and credentials, the hero, under the guise of Miguel, comes to New Aragon and becomes governor, portraying a stupid and cowardly sissy. He quickly discovers that power in this Spanish colony has been usurped by the cruel Colonel Huerta, on whose secret orders his best friend was killed. The people of the province are brutally oppressed by Huerta's soldiers. Diego decides to resist the colonel's tyranny with a double game.
Dressed in a black cloak, hat and mask, he, under the guise of Zorro (according to local beliefs, this is the name of the spirit of the black fox who will bring freedom to the people), appears in the city and punishes dishonest judges, cruel soldiers and deceiving merchants, protecting the common people.Show more

Zorro is a character in folk stories of the inhabitants of New Spain, known since the beginning of the 17th century. According to legend, under the mask of Zorro there was not one specific person, but different people. When difficult times came and people needed help, anyone could put on a homemade Zorro costume and anonymously come to the rescue. There are known cases when the personality of Zorro was attributed to various adventurers, criminals and leaders of the guerrilla movement during the Mexican-American War. He gained fame as a literary character much later in the adventure books of the writer Johnston McCulley. He first appears in printed literature in the story “The Curse of Capistrano,” published in 1919. The following year, the first film, The Mark of Zorro, starring Douglas Fairbanks, appeared. Subsequently, many films were made about Zorro both in America and abroad.
