As a rule, smoke is used during attacking actions. First, artillery with MLRS works closely, then smoke is activated and, under the cover of explosions of high-explosive fragmentation shells with smoke, assault groups approach. This is a classic.

In reality this is not always the case. Either the wind was in the wrong direction and the adjustment was not correct, then the assault groups did not move out at the specified time, but the smoke had already flown and quickly ended. It happens that there are only two smokes for a task and no more. The gun cannot operate with smoke because it is under return fire from the Fritz, and the other is not aimed at the smoke and that very precious time is wasted. The attack aircraft are approaching, but it is not possible to cover it with smoke normally. There are different problems due to different reasons.
