Brandenburg surrounds the German capital Berlin at its center and together with it forms the European metropolitan region of Berlin/Brandenburg, in which around six million people live. More than a third of Brandenburg's area is taken up by nature parks, forests, lakes, and water areas.

The founding year of the Mark Brandenburg is considered to be 1157, in which the Ascania Albrecht the Bear appropriated the area with the conquest of Brandenburg and made it part of the Holy Roman Empire.
