On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, IHN hosted a 1 hour webinar with Linda Bazinet BSc, MSc. Linda brought us on a journey through the fascinating world of melatonin. Best known for its effects on sleep, melatonin is involved in much more. Described by Descartes as the “seat of the soul”, the pineal gland produces melatonin in response to nerve impulses from the optic tract via the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). This small hormone is mighty – not only is it key in circadian rhythm, but it also affects mood, fertility, and immunity. In addition, melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that can cross the blood-brain barrier and has neuroprotective effects.

You Will Learn:
- How melatonin secretion varies – daily and over a lifetime
- Effect of melatonin on mood
- Importance of melatonin as an antioxidant
- The role of melatonin in fertility
- Melatonin supplementation dosages and natural sources
