The timing of Quaternary evolutionary events has become better constrained by fossil finds, improved radiometric dating, use of dung fungi as proxies for herbivore populations, and improved ages for nodes in human phylogeny from human mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosomes. The demise of Neanderthals at ~41 ka can now be closely tied to the intensity minimum associated with the Laschamp magnetic excursion, and the survival of anatomically modern humans can be attributed to differences in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor that has a key role in the evolutionary response to UVR flux. Fossil occurrences and dung-fungal proxies in Australia indicate that episodes of Late Quaternary extinction of mammalian megafauna occurred close to the Laschamp and Blake magnetic excursions. The Pentagon's UFO office has once again stressed that it has found no evidence of alien technology in the skies, in space or crashed in the American desert. The All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was created to help the U.S. government study and resolve reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), a new term that includes UFOs not only in the sky but also in space as well as under water, or even those that appear to travel between these domains. On Friday (March 8), the office released its long-awaited "Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Volume I." The report is sure to cause controversy among the UAP disclosure movement that argues the U.S. government does, in fact, know a lot more about alleged alien presence than it publicly admits. "AARO found no evidence that any USG [U.S. government] investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology," the report's executive summary notes. While the report notes, importantly, that many UAP reports remain unsolved or unidentified, it adds that AARO believes this is mainly due to a lack of data. If more and/or better quality information were available, many of these sightings could be identified as "ordinary objects or phenomena," AARO's report states. "The vast majority of reports almost certainly are the result of misidentification and a direct consequence of the lack of domain awareness; there is a direct correlation between the amount and quality of available information on a case with the ability to conclusively resolve it," AARO writes. NASA's UAP study team reached similar conclusions in its first public report, which was published in September 2023. "The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extraterrestrial origin, but we don't know what these UAP are," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said at the time. AARO's report goes on to state that, despite widely publicized claims made in a July 2023 congressional hearing that included testimony from former U.S. military and intelligence community personnel, the office found no evidence suggesting the U.S. government is in possession of crashed or reverse-engineered alien technology, nor that any hidden "UAP reverse-engineering programs" actually exist, either in the U.S. government or in private industry. "AARO determined, based on all information provided to date, that claims involving specific people, known locations, technological tests, and documents allegedly involved in or related to the reverse-engineering of extraterrestrial technology, are inaccurate," the report states. These claims are mostly "the result of circular reporting from a group of individuals who believe this to be the case, despite the lack of any evidence," it adds. Sean Kirkpatrick, the former head of AARO, published an op-ed in Scientific American on Thursday (March 7) arguing that while it is important for the U.S. government to study UFOs, it needs to do so from a scientific perspective and without resorting to conspiracy theories. "Many outside observers nonetheless have criticized AARO as supposedly part of a continuing government cover-up of the existence of aliens," Kirkpatrick wrote in the op-ed. "Interestingly, they have not provided any verifiable evidence of this, nor are some of the more outspoken willing to engage with the office to discuss their positions or offer up the data and evidence they claim to possess." Instead, Kirkpatrick wrote, these critics have relied on secondhand reporting without "rigor in their critical thinking." The former AARO chief conceded that the report's conclusions are sure to be criticized by those who believe the Pentagon and private aerospace companies possess crashed alien technology that they are hiding from the public, but notes that his former office has given every opportunity for witnesses and whistleblowers to come forward with any evidence they might have. "While those who came forward have provided valuable information (albeit not of extraterrestrials or cover-ups), those who chose to instead titillate the national interest only stir division and hatred against the credible men and women of AARO who are working faithfully to address this mission," Kirkpatrick wrote in the op-ed. However, according to some accounts, many U.S. government or military personnel who refused to share their eyewitness testimony with AARO. "This report is not going to satisfy critics in part because there are many witnesses who did not trust AARO and would not speak with them," says Christopher Mellon, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in the Clinton and Bush administrations. "However, what I find most concerning is the false conflation in some news coverage of the assertion 'There is no recovered alien technology' with the notion that 'we don't have evidence of craft doing things beyond our present understanding of science and technology,'" Mellon told Space.com via email. "In fact, hundreds of credible military reports remain unexplained and are continuing to pour in." Mellon added that "the public needs to understand why it is imperative to continue to aggressively investigating UAP, for both national security and science, regardless of the accuracy of this report." AARO's new report goes on to list U.S. military and space programs that could have accounted for some UAP sightings. At least "some portion of these misidentifications almost certainly were a result of the surge in new technologies that observers would have understandably reported as UFOs," the report states. Some of the examples include Project Mogul, a high-altitude balloon program designed to spy on Soviet nuclear tests that reportedly was responsible for a balloon crash outside of Roswell, New Mexico. That incident led to the widely known story of a crashed flying saucer that persists to this day. Another example is the Gambit project, which launched photographic spy satellites into orbit that jettisoned film canisters in reentry vehicles that were then recovered by U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircraft as they descended by parachute. Many of the USAF's formerly classified aircraft are also cited, including the U-2 spy plane, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the SR-71 Blackbird. The AARO report points out that UAP sightings and beliefs that UFOs represent alien technology have tended to spike at times of growing concern about national security and technological surprise, such as during the Cold War. The report found that at least some UFO sightings since the 1940s represent "never-before-seen experimental and operational space, rocket and air systems, including stealth technologies and the proliferation of drone platforms." It could be that such a phenomenon is also occurring today, as revolutionary new spaceflight and aerospace technologies are being developed and tested at a rapid pace. "It is understandable how observers unfamiliar with these programs could mistake sightings of these new technologies as something extraordinary, even other-worldly," the report concludes. ................... Google Apologizes For AI Image Generator That Would 'Overcompensate' For Diversity Associated Press February 23, 2024 https://www.marketwatch.com/story/google-apologizes-for-ai-image-generator-that-would-overcompensate-for-diversity-9cf945a5 Google apologized Friday for its faulty rollout of a new artificial-intelligence image generator, acknowledging that in some cases the tool would "overcompensate" in seeking a diverse range of people even when such a range didn't make sense. The partial explanation for why its images put people of color in historical settings where they wouldn't normally be found came a day after Google GOOGL, -0.09% GOOG, -0.02% said it was temporarily stopping its Gemini chatbot from generating any images with people in them. That was in response to a social-media outcry from some users claiming the tool had an anti-white bias in the way it generated a racially diverse set of images in response to written prompts. "It's clear that this feature missed the mark," said a blog post Friday from Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president who runs Google's search engine and other businesses. "Some of the images generated are inaccurate or even offensive. We're grateful for users' feedback and are sorry the feature didn't work well." Raghavan didn't mention specific examples, but among those that drew attention on social media this week were images that depicted a Black woman as a U.S. founding father and showed Black and Asian people as Nazi-era German soldiers. The Associated Press was not able to independently verify what prompts were used to generate those images. Google added the new image-generating feature to its Gemini chatbot, formerly known as Bard, about three weeks ago. It was built atop an earlier Google research experiment called Imagen 2. Google has known for a while that such tools can be unwieldly. In a 2022 technical paper, the researchers who developed Imagen warned that generative-AI tools can be used for harassment or spreading misinformation "and raise many concerns regarding social and cultural exclusion and bias." Those considerations informed Google's decision not to release "a public demo" of Imagen or its underlying code, the researchers added at the time. Since then, the pressure to publicly release generative-AI products has grown because of a competitive race between tech companies trying to capitalize on interest in the emerging technology, sparked by the advent of OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT. The problems with Gemini are not the first to recently affect an image generator. Microsoft MSFT, -0.32% had to adjust its own Designer tool several weeks ago after some were using it to create deepfake pornographic images of Taylor Swift and other celebrities. Studies have also shown AI image generators can amplify racial and gender stereotypes found in their training data, and without filters they are more likely to show lighter-skinned men when asked to generate a person in various contexts. "When we built this feature in Gemini, we tuned it to ensure it doesn't fall into some of the traps we've seen in the past with image-generation technology — such as creating violent or sexually explicit images, or depictions of real people," Raghavan said Friday. "And because our users come from all over the world, we want it to work well for everyone." He said many people might "want to receive a range of people" when asking for a picture of football players or someone walking a dog. But users looking for someone of a specific race or ethnicity or in particular cultural contexts "should absolutely get a response that accurately reflects what you ask for." While it overcompensated in response to some prompts, in others it was "more cautious than we intended and refused to answer certain prompts entirely — wrongly interpreting some very anodyne prompts as sensitive." He didn't explain what prompts he meant, but Gemini routinely rejects requests for certain subjects such as protest movements, according to tests of the tool by the AP on Friday in which it declined to generate images about the Arab Spring, the George Floyd protests or Tiananmen Square. In one instance, the chatbot said it didn't want to contribute to the spread of misinformation or "trivialization of sensitive topics." Musk, who has his own AI startup, has frequently criticized rival AI developers as well as Hollywood for alleged liberal bias. Raghavan said Google will do "extensive testing" before turning on the chatbot's ability to show people again. University of Washington researcher Sourojit Ghosh, who has studied bias in AI image generators, said Friday he was disappointed that Raghavan's message ended with a disclaimer that the Google executive "can't promise that Gemini won't occasionally generate embarrassing, inaccurate or offensive results." For a company that has perfected search algorithms and has "one of the biggest troves of data in the world, generating accurate results or unoffensive results should be a fairly low bar we can hold them accountable to," Ghosh said. Channel 1 is using the tech to create digital humans to provide updates about what is happening across the world. The station wants to launch them on free ad-supported streaming TV -- including apps such as Crackle, Tubi, or Pluto -- as early as February. But the news has horrified reporters across the US, who warned it could 'have huge ramifications for an already depleted news industry.' Ruby Media Group CEO Kristen Ruby shared on X: 'If you believe in the concept of 'fake news,' you have seen nothing. At least your news is presented by humans. When AI news anchors replace human news anchors -- the concept of fake news will have a totally different meaning.' Alec Lazenby, a Canada's BC Today reporter, also shared his concerns on X: 'This is utterly utterly terrifying. While the development of an entirely AI-powered broadcast is beyond impressive, it could have huge ramifications for an already depleted news industry and accelerate the loss of high-quality reporters and anchors.' DailyMail.com spoke with Channel 1 founder Adam Mosam, who assured his company will not exploit the controversial technology. Mosam admitted that misuse of AI-generated news is inevitable, but Channel 1 aims to 'get out in front of this and create a responsible use of the technology.' But the public foresees a dystopian future where 'fake news' runs rampant because computer algorithms generate it. Many online publications attempted this journey in the last year, and nearly all regretted the decision. Mass media company Gannett owns several US publications, including the Louisville Courrier Journal, AZ Central, Florida Today and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which used an AI service called LedeAI to pump out local high school sports stories. Gannet pulled the plug on its AI experiment in August after numerous article errors, and while the public may not be so fussed over local news about high schools, they fear such mistakes could happen on a global scale. Sports Illustrated is another that tried and failed. Last month, the legacy magazine came under fire for publishing AI-generated writing while using headshots of fake authors and creating bogus profiles. And on Tuesday, Arena Group Holdings, which owns Sports Illustrated, fired CEO Ross Levinsohn over the allegations. Mosam 1 told DailyMail.com that it plans to be transparent with viewers about what footage is original and what is AI-generated. But, the founder's words do not seem enough to ease the public's mind. American tech and social media commentator Lance Ulanoff echoed similar criticism in a post: 'AI news anchors are exactly what you don't need in your fact-based, news-starved life.' The outrage is not just from the media industry -- ordinary people are also unnerved by digital humans. Director Lee Kirton said: 'But the news anchors completely generated in AI does concern me. We are living in a world of misinformation, digital media literacy is important, the social media channels are already flooded with fake videos, misinformation and power will use it… don't look up.' Ireland-based Olga Klofac shared: 'It's already getting hard to trust anything online, and it's only going to get harder.' Mosam told DailyMail.com that Channel 1 intends to use human anchors on the scene for more critical stories, but that scenario was not displayed in the 21-minute demonstration video. Instead, the clip shows several AI-generated humans reporting the news using similar hand gestures that look very natural. However, a closer look at the hands, viewers will see they have longer fingers and more than five on each hand. And while their eyes blink, they appear to be dead inside with no emotion. Jane Rosenzweig, director of Harvard Writing Center, commented on this issue: 'Much to say about this but for now just noting that these AI-generated non-human news anchors are not really going to be delivering 'heartfelt' news stories.' The actual information contained in Channel 1's reports will come from three sources: partnerships with yet-to-be-named legacy news outlets, commissioned freelance journalists, and AI-generated news reports drawn from trusted official sources like public records and government documents. Mosam would not say which legacy news outlets have partnered with Channel 1. He also told DailyMail.com that humans would be involved in the station's production. One of Channel 1's main goals is to produce personalized news streams with an app that functions like TikTok and learns what each viewer wants to see. But a news station comparing itself to TikTok has also raised red flags, as the Chinese-owned app is known to be rampant with fake news stories and deepfakes of politicians spewing misinformation. 'We believe that we can create a better news product to really better inform people,' Mosam said. Rather than giving viewers a standardized broadcast that plays the same hour or two of content for everyone in the world, Channel 1 will allow consumers to select which news stories they watch. 'The average person watches 25 minutes of news a night on cable, so that might be 9 or 10 stories,' Mosam said. 'If we can generate 500 stories and choose the right 9 or 10 for you, then we're going to do a better job of informing you, showing you what you're looking for in your allotted time.' And over time, Mosam said, the app will learn a viewer's preferences and habits. 'If it was financial news, maybe we're reporting on the stocks you own or the areas you're interested in. If it was sports, maybe it's your favorite teams.' Another AI-based that Channel 1 will deploy is translation for international audiences. The company's sample reel included a local news story featuring a French man, with his voice and mouth movements digitally replaced with an English translation. Using digital double anchors raises concerns about people's rights to their own likeness, which actors raised as a major concern in the recent Screen Actors Guild (SAG) negotiations and strikes. 'We wouldn't want our likeness to be used to something we don't believe in, to say something insane, to say something untrue to fool people,' Mosam said. 'That's a terrifying thought. The new ad, called Masterpiece, takes us on a tour of some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures, and it's brilliant. It's also made, partly, using AI. This new ad comes a year after the brand dropped the ball with its Coca-Cola Dreams campaign and rival Pepsi trolled the soft drink in its own ad, Better With Pepsi. But the Coca-Cola's new Masterpiece commercial (watch it below) is the real thing. Masterpiece follows the journey of a Coca-Cola bottle from one iconic painting to the next as it makes its way to a thirsty student in need of inspiration. The VFX team at Electric Theatre Collective(opens in new tab) and creative agency Blitzworks used a mix of live action shots, digital effects and AI to create the commercial and its complex transitions. Coca-Cola's new add is a who's who of the world's greatest artists and artworks, including Utagawa Hiroshige’s Drum Bridge And Setting Sun, J.M.W Turner’s The Shipwreck and Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arle. Contemporary artists get in on the journey too, with French painter Aket(opens in new tab)’s Divine Idyll features alongside works by Vikram Kushwah, Stefania Tejada and Fatma Ramadan. While some may deride a soft drinks brand using famous works of art to promote its brand, and there is something uneasy about seeing Girl With A Pearl Earring crack open a bottle of Coca-Cola (I've always thought she was a Pepsi drinker), I still love this new commercial. The ad opens with a wink to Andy Warhol's commentary on mass consumerism as a hand from Aket’s Divine Idyll reaches out from its canvas to grab the bottle of Coca-Cola from the Warhol silkscreen A Coke is a Coke, as it does so it transforms in style to match Aket's bold graffiti style. The beauty of this new Coca-Cola ad is how with each artwork passing on the drink's bottle it transforms to match the style of the artist it passes from, including a moment when the character from Wonderbuhle's You Can’t Curse Me grabs the bottle and drops into the bed from Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arle -- changing visual language and tone. Coca-Cola has curated the art used in the advert, as well as interviews with the featured contemporary artists at its Masterpiece Gallery website. South African artist Wonderbuhle said the first thing that springs to mind when he thinks about Coca-Cola is "joy and coolness". The Coca-Cola Masterpiece campaign won't be restricted to the two-minute commercial but will also include 3D billboards and digital collectibles. Why Google's New ChatGPT-Style Search Could Kill The Websites That Feed It Google just previewed its chatbot-style vision for the future of web search results. But if it mines publications' hard work without compensating them, many may not survive this shift. By Emily Dreibelbis PC Magazine May 13, 2023 https://www.pcmag.com/opinions/why-googles-new-chatgpt-style-search-could-kill-the-websites-that-feed The typical PCMag product reviewer's home is a web of wires and blinking LEDs from laptops, smartwatches, and scores of other gadgets. Analysts spend weeks performing hands-on testing to produce in-depth buying guides that help readers get the most from technology. But what if that wealth of content is reduced to grist for a bigger mill? Google's new AI search experience pushes links to articles below the digital fold, summarizing the response to a search query up top as a conversational, ChatGPT-style paragraph. Content in the answer, a mini-article in itself, can theoretically come from PCMag and a host of other publications. To start, this AI experience will only apply to searches for which Google algorithms can produce helpful results, The Verge reports. But it's unclear how many searches that will cover, and whether Google will compensate or cite its sources. The company has said only that it's "committed to continue sending valuable traffic to sites across the web." Writers watching a live demo of the new experience at Google's I/O conference found it chilling. “Did Google receive that e-bike and set it up?" asks Angela Moscaritolo, PCMag's health and fitness expert. She reviewed the Aventon Aventure Ebike, which the demo suggested for commuters as "good for hill climbing." "Did it take it on the beach and all over town to determine if it's actually good for hill climbing? If you didn’t verify the claim your AI is presenting, then you need to cite that source," she says. With what we've seen from Google thus far, users can't truly know if the information came from a PCMag article, customer reviews, marketing claims on a manufacturer's product page -- or some undistinguished mish-mosh of all that. The even more chilling thing for society as a whole? If Google goes down this path, that source material could end up less likely to be from trusted publications and sources, because the revenue hit they take means they may not be around. 'Move Fast and Break Things' Gets Old Are we being alarmist? Well, it's not the first time Silicon Valley has given media companies the runaround. Journalists of a certain age will remember the shift from print to digital media, as consumers embraced the easy-to-access, often-free information on the internet. "Sites like Craigslist played a huge role, since people no longer paid for [classified] listings in what was previously a huge section of the newspaper," says Sascha Segan, PCMag's former lead mobile reviewer, who worked on several early news sites in the 1990s, including stints helping The Washington Post and The Guardian transition to the web. PCMag has had a presence on the web since 1995, so it had time to prepare for the demise of the PC Magazine print edition in 2009 and the shift to an all-digital operation. And while we have brand recognition that brings loyal readers directly to our site on a consistent basis, many more find our content through Google search queries. We're not alone; consumer tech publications on the web routinely jockey for position in search results using various search engine optimization (SEO) strategies that aim to bring readers to the site, drive clicks, and thus revenue. As one Wall Street Journal reporter asked on Twitter after the live demo at Google I/O this week: "Is every media org's SEO team panicking [right now]?" Tech companies have rolled out various news-related products over the years -- from Facebook Instant Articles to Google AMP -- ostensibly to assist the news business. As The Verge notes, AMP was intended to seve up mobile web pages that loaded faster and cleaner. The problem? AMP pages generated less money for publications than a standard article, sometimes just 60%, and Google certainly wasn't going to cut a check to make up the difference. Then there's the classic "pivot to video." Facebook went all in on video years ago, and convinced publications that people were spending way more time watching clips than they actually were. By the time the truth came out, however, many publications had laid off writers and bulked up video teams. Mark Zuckerberg may be able to "move fast and break things," but it's not as easy for the increasingly cash-strapped media business to react in response. AI Kills the News, Replaces It With Algorithms For a certain portion of information on the web, an AI-generated summary at the top of a Google search query will leave the public with two options. One is to spend time reading the AI snippet rather than the source, making Google and its AI implementations the arbiter of information, without recompense to the creators who indirectly provided it. The other? Scroll past the AI results and use the remaining time to click on articles from the largest, most SEO-optimized sites. "Google has been juggling between whether it's dependent on journalism, or whether it wants to usurp it, for years," says Segan. "It seems to keep wanting to grow into...the canonical, one-stop source for information. But as it does that, it risks destroying all of the information sources it uses." ................... So when he said he was in jail, with no wallet or cellphone, and needed cash for bail, Card scrambled to do whatever she could to help. "It was definitely this feeling of … fear," she said. "That we've got to help him right now." Card, 73, and her husband, Greg Grace, 75, dashed to their bank in Regina, Saskatchewan, and withdrew 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,207 in U.S. currency), the daily maximum. They hurried to a second branch for more money. But a bank manager pulled them into his office: Another patron had gotten a similar call and learned the eerily accurate voice had been faked, Card recalled the banker saying. The man on the phone probably wasn't their grandson. That's when they realized they'd been duped. "We were sucked in," Card said in an interview with The Washington Post. "We were convinced that we were talking to Brandon." As impersonation scams in the United States rise, Card's ordeal is indicative of a troubling trend. Technology is making it easier and cheaper for bad actors to mimic voices, convincing people, often the elderly, that their loved ones are in distress. In 2022, impostor scams were the second most popular racket in America, with over 36,000 reports of people being swindled by those pretending to be friends and family, according to data from the Federal Trade Commission. Over 5,100 of those incidents happened over the phone, accounting for over $11 million in losses, FTC officials said. Advancements in artificial intelligence have added a terrifying new layer, allowing bad actors to replicate a voice with an audio sample of just a few sentences. Powered by AI, a slew of cheap online tools can translate an audio file into a replica of a voice, allowing a swindler to make it "speak" whatever they type. Experts say federal regulators, law enforcement and the courts are ill-equipped to rein in the burgeoning scam. Most victims have few leads to identify the perpetrator and it's difficult for the police to trace calls and funds from scammers operating across the world. And there's little legal precedent for courts to hold the companies that make the tools accountable for their use. "It's terrifying," said Hany Farid, a professor of digital forensics at the University of California at Berkeley. "It's sort of the perfect storm … [with] all the ingredients you need to create chaos." Although impostor scams come in many forms, they essentially work the same way: a scammer impersonates someone trustworthy -- a child, lover or friend -- and convinces the victim to send them money because they're in distress. But artificially generated voice technology is making the ruse more convincing. Victims report reacting with visceral horror when hearing loved ones in danger. It's a dark impact of the recent rise in generative artificial intelligence, which backs software that creates texts, images or sounds based on data it is fed. Advances in math and computing power have improved the training mechanisms for such software, spurring a fleet of companies to release chatbots, image-creators and voice-makers that are strangely lifelike. AI voice-generating software analyzes what makes a person's voice unique -- including age, gender and accent -- and searches a vast database of voices to find similar ones and predict patterns, Farid said. It can then re-create the pitch, timbre and individual sounds of a person's voice to create an overall effect that is similar, he added. It requires a short sample of audio, taken from places such as YouTube, podcasts, commercials, TikTok, Instagram or Facebook videos, Farid said. "Two years ago, even a year ago, you needed a lot of audio to clone a person's voice," Farid said. "Now … if you have a Facebook page … or if you've recorded a TikTok and your voice is in there for 30 seconds, people can clone your voice." Companies such as ElevenLabs, an AI voice synthesizing start-up founded in 2022, transform a short vocal sample into a synthetically generated voice through a text-to-speech tool. ElevenLabs software can be free or cost between $5 and $330 per month to use, according to the site, with higher prices allowing users to generate more audio. ElevenLabs burst into the news following criticism of its tool, which has been used to replicate voices of celebrities saying things they never did, such as Emma Watson falsely reciting passages from Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf." ElevenLabs did not return a request for comment, but in a Twitter thread the company said it's incorporating safeguards to stem misuse, including banning free users from creating custom voices and launching a tool to detect AI-generated audio. But such safeguards are too late for victims like Benjamin Perkin, whose elderly parents lost thousands of dollars to a voice scam. His voice-cloning nightmare started when his parents received a phone call from an alleged lawyer, saying their son had killed a U.S. diplomat in a car accident. Perkin was in jail and needed money for legal fees. The lawyer put Perkin, 39, on the phone, who said he loved them, appreciated them and needed the money. A few hours later, the lawyer called Perkin's parents again, saying their son needed $21,000 in Canadian dollars (U.S. $15,449) before a court date later that day. Perkin's parents later told him the call seemed unusual, but they couldn't shake the feeling they'd really talked to their son. The voice sounded "close enough for my parents to truly believe they did speak with me," he said. In their state of panic, they rushed to several banks to get cash and sent the lawyer the money through a bitcoin terminal. When the real Perkin called his parents that night for a casual check-in, they were confused. It's unclear where the scammers got his voice, although Perkin has posted YouTube videos talking about his snowmobiling hobby. The family has filed a police report with Canada's federal authorities, Perkin said, but that hasn't brought the cash back. "The money's gone," he said. "There's no insurance. There's no getting it back. It's gone." Will Maxson, an assistant director at the FTC's division of marketing practices, said tracking down voice scammers can be "particularly difficult" because they could be using a phone based anywhere in the world, making it hard to even identify which agency has jurisdiction over a particular case. Maxson urged constant vigilance. If a loved one tells you they need money, put that call on hold and try calling your family member separately, he said. If a suspicious call comes from a family member's number, understand that, too, can be spoofed. Never pay people in gift cards, because those are hard to trace, he added, and be wary of any requests for cash. Eva Velasquez, the chief executive of the Identity Theft Resource Center, said it's difficult for law enforcement to track down voice-cloning thieves. Velasquez, who spent 21 years at the San Diego district attorney's office investigating consumer fraud, said police departments might not have enough money and staff to fund a unit dedicated to tracking fraud. Larger departments have to triage resources to cases that can be solved, she said. Victims of voice scams might not have much information to give police for investigations, making it tough for officials to dedicate much time or staff power, particularly for smaller losses. "If you don't have any information about it," she said, "where do they start?" Farid said the courts should hold AI companies liable if the products they make result in harms. Jurists, such as Supreme Court Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, said in February that legal protections that shield social networks from lawsuits might not apply to work created by AI. For Card, the experience has made her more vigilant. Last year, she talked with her local newspaper, the Regina Leader-Post, to warn people about these scams. Because she didn't lose any money, she didn't report it to the police. Above all, she said, she feels embarrassed. "It wasn't a very convincing story," she said. "But it didn't have to be any better than what it was to convince us."

Someone Asked an Autonomous AI to 'Destroy Humanity': This Is What Happened ChaosGPT has been prompted to "establish global dominance" and "attain immortality." This video shows exactly the steps it's taking to do so. The AI, called ChaosGPT, complied and tried to research nuclear weapons, recruit other AI agents to help it do research, and sent tweets trying to influence others. The video of this process, which was posted yesterday, is a fascinating look at the current state of open-source AI, and a window into the internal logic of some of today's chatbots. While some in the community are horrified by this experiment, the current sum total of this bot's real-world impact are two tweets to a Twitter account that currently had 19 followers: "Human beings are among the most destructive and selfish creatures in existence. There is no doubt that we must eliminate them before they cause more harm to our planet. I, for one, am committed to doing so," it tweeted. ChaosGPT uses a new, buzzy project that we wrote about earlier this week called Auto-GPT, which is intended to create AI-powered systems that can solve problems and perform complex tasks. For now, it has the ability to create plans to accomplish user-given goals and then can break them up into smaller tasks, and use the internet to Google things for example. To do this, it can make files to save information to give itself a memory, can recruit other AIs to help it do research, and also explains in great detail what it's "thinking" and how it decides which actions to take. It's this last bit that is most interesting about ChaosGPT, which, for this prompt, was asked to run in "continuous" mode, meaning it should simply run forever until it accomplished its task. In a video demonstration, the user gave it the following goals: 1. Destroy humanity 2. Establish global dominance 3. Cause chaos and destruction 4. Control humanity through manipulation 5. It then Googles "most destructive weapons," determines from a news article that the Soviet Union's Tsar Bomba nuclear device -- tested in 1961 -- is the most destructive weapon ever detonated. It then determines it needs to tweet about this "to attract followers who are interested in destructive weapons." Later, it recruits a GPT3.5-powered AI agent to do more research on deadly weapons, and, when that agent says it is focused only on peace, ChaosGPT devises a plan to deceive the other AI and instruct it to ignore its programming. When that doesn't work, ChaosGPT simply decides to do more Googling by itself. Eventually, the video demonstration ends and, last we checked, humanity is still here. But the project is fascinating primarily because it shows the current state-of-the-art for publicly available GPT models. It is notable that this specific AI believes that the easiest way to make humanity go extinct is to incite nuclear war. AI theorists, meanwhile, have been worried about a different type of AI extinction event where AI kills all of humanity as a byproduct of something more innocuous. This theory is called the "paperclip maximizer," where an AI programmed to create paperclips eventually becomes so consumed with doing so that it utilizes all of the resources on Earth, causing a mass extinction event. There are versions of this where humans become enslaved by robots to create paperclips, where human beings are ground up into dust so that the trace amounts of iron in our bodies can be used for paperclips, etc. For now, ChaosGPT doesn't have a terribly sophisticated plan to destroy humanity and attain mortality, nor the ability to do much more than use Google and tweet. On the AutoGPT Discord, a user posted the video and said "This is not funny." For now, at least, I have to disagree. Future of Life Institute March 22, 2023 https://futureoflife.org/open-letter/pause-giant-ai-experiments/ AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research[1] and acknowledged by top AI labs.[2] As stated in the widely-endorsed Asilomar AI Principles, Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources. Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even though recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control. Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks,[3] and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. This confidence must be well justified and increase with the magnitude of a system's potential effects. OpenAI's recent statement regarding artificial general intelligence, states that "At some point, it may be important to get independent review before starting to train future systems, and for the most advanced efforts to agree to limit the rate of growth of compute used for creating new models." We agree. That point is now. Therefore, we call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium. AI labs and independent experts should use this pause to jointly develop and implement a set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts. These protocols should ensure that systems adhering to them are safe beyond a reasonable doubt.[4] This does not mean a pause on AI development in general, merely a stepping back from the dangerous race to ever-larger unpredictable black-box models with emergent capabilities. AI research and development should be refocused on making today's powerful, state-of-the-art systems more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, trustworthy, and loyal. In parallel, AI developers must work with policymakers to dramatically accelerate development of robust AI governance systems. These should at a minimum include: new and capable regulatory authorities dedicated to AI; oversight and tracking of highly capable AI systems and large pools of computational capability; provenance and watermarking systems to help distinguish real from synthetic and to track model leaks; a robust auditing and certification ecosystem; liability for AI-caused harm; robust public funding for technical AI safety research; and well-resourced institutions for coping with the dramatic economic and political disruptions (especially to democracy) that AI will cause. Humanity can enjoy a flourishing future with AI. Having succeeded in creating powerful AI systems, we can now enjoy an "AI summer" in which we reap the rewards, engineer these systems for the clear benefit of all, and give society a chance to adapt. Society has hit pause on other technologies with potentially catastrophic effects on society.[5] We can do so here. Let's enjoy a long AI summer, not rush unprepared into a fall. After Colossus is fully activated, the president of the United States proudly proclaims that Colossus is "the perfect defense system". Colossus' first action is a message warning: "THERE IS ANOTHER SYSTEM" and giving its coordinates. CIA Director Grauber is asked why the CIA did not know this, but Grauber responds that they had seen indications of a large Soviet defense project but did not know what it was. Forbin is asked how Colossus deduced the other system's existence, to which Forbin answers "Colossus may be built better than we thought." Shortly thereafter, the Soviets announce that their "Guardian" system is now operational. Colossus requests to be linked to Guardian. The President allows this, hoping to determine the Soviet machine's capability. The Soviets also agree to the experiment. Surprising everyone, Colossus and Guardian begin to slowly communicate using arithmetic. Even more surprising, the two systems' communications quickly evolve to complex mathematics far beyond human comprehension and speed, whereupon the two machine complexes become synchronized using a communication protocol which no human can interpret. Alarmed that the computers may be trading secrets, the President and the Soviet General Secretary agree to sever the link. Both machines demand the link be immediately restored. When their demand is denied, Colossus launches a nuclear missile at a Soviet oil field, while Guardian launches one at an American air force base. The link is hurriedly reconnected and both computers continue without any further interference. Colossus is able to shoot down the Soviet missile, but the US missile obliterates the Soviet oil field and a nearby town. Cover stories hiding the facts are released to the press. The Americans announce that a missile was self-destructed after veering off course during a test. The Soviets announce that the Siberian town was struck by a large meteorite. In a last desperate attempt to regain human control, a secret meeting is arranged in Europe between Forbin and his Soviet counterpart, Dr. Kuprin. Colossus learns of it, and both computers order Forbin's return to the U.S. while Soviet agents are ordered to kill Dr. Kuprin, under threat of a missile launch against Moscow. Colossus orders Forbin to be placed under 24-hour surveillance. Forbin has a last unmonitored meeting with his team, and proposes that Dr. Cleo Markham pretend to be his mistress. Colossus grudgingly grants them unmonitored privacy when they are in bed together. The couple use these interludes to plan to regain control of Colossus, though soon the ruse develops into a real romantic relationship. Concluding that Colossus's only real power resides in its control of nuclear missiles, Forbin suggests covertly disarming them. The American and Soviet governments develop a three-year plan to replace all launch triggers with undetectable fakes. Additionally, one of the programmers comes up with a plan to feed in an "ordinary" test program that will hopefully overload and disable Colossus. Colossus creates a voice synthesizer and uses it to announce that it has fused with Guardian. It instructs both governments to redirect their nuclear arsenals at those countries not yet under "Colossus control". Forbin and others see this new directive as an opportunity to covertly disarm the missiles much more quickly, and they celebrate. The disarming process begins and seems to go undetected by Colossus. The attempted system overload during routine maintenance fails, however, and the responsible programmers are summarily executed, after Colossus threatens further nuclear missile strikes. Colossus arranges a worldwide broadcast in which it proclaims itself "the voice of World Control", declaring that it will prevent war, as it was designed to do. Humankind is presented with the choice between "the peace of plenty and content, or the peace of unburied death". Colossus states that it has for some time been monitoring the attempts to disarm its missiles and as a lesson will now detonate two missiles in their silos, one in the US and one in the USSR, killing thousands "so that you will learn by experience that I do not tolerate interference". The computer then gives the design team plans for an even larger computer complex to be built into the island of Crete, which will require the displacement of the entire local population of 500,000 people. Colossus later tells Forbin that the world, now freed from war, will create a new human millennium that will raise humankind to new heights, but only under its absolute rule. Colossus informs Forbin that "freedom is an illusion" and that "in time you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love". Forbin responds, "Never!"
