There is what some might call an old Navajo Prophecy. It tells of a time when our Diné will stop learning. When people won't see what is happening right in front of them. When ignorance dominates. When the language isn’t spoken properly. When the men start cutting their hair.

This prophecy is happening now.

0:02
that means a prophecy that in the future
0:05
our people are going to begin to lack
0:07
the responsibility of knowing of
0:10
learning and applying it in their lives
0:12
properly the greatest danger they tell
0:14
us
0:18
[Music]
0:27
converting the traditional teachings of
0:29
our the net
0:31
as I was growing up I had a lot of
0:33
opportunities to attend ceremonies and
0:36
that
0:37
and during the ceremonies when they're
0:39
taking a break
0:41
and taking food or
0:44
some other reason that they've kind of
0:46
put the uh
0:49
paraphernalia for the conducting the
0:51
ceremony over here to the side for a
0:54
moment and everybody's taking a break
0:56
they have that time
0:59
where they have a lot of discussion on
1:01
things that uh
1:03
they may be of interest to all of the
1:06
families and the people
1:07
relatives that are there
1:09
and I've had the opportunity to listen
1:11
to things that they were told when they
1:14
were growing up many of these people are
1:16
elderly but when they were growing up
1:18
the old people said there will come a
1:20
time
1:21
when this will happen
1:23
there will become a time when you will
1:25
cut your hair
1:26
and there will be a time
1:28
when you will begin to uh lose your
1:31
language
1:32
and the way that things are supposed to
1:34
be done
1:35
and they nozzle
1:37
and you can see
1:42
that means you'll no longer have the
1:44
Navajo not or the Navajo bun
1:47
and also
1:50
that means you will be losing your
1:52
language
1:53
and also that uh
1:55
bend on the hitting next time
2:00
which means all of the things that are
2:03
traditional teachings in that will be
2:05
lost and will be ignored
2:08
and those are the things that our people
2:10
are cautioned to be aware of in the
2:13
future times when teaching are given
2:16
Among Us
2:18
to any of the uh younger people by the
2:21
elders
2:22
they always encourage us to listen
2:26
uh
2:28
and they tell us that uh what's your
2:30
uncle
2:32
there's a word with the uncle
2:35
that is a word that has so many
2:37
different applications in different ways
2:40
that means that when you are
2:43
a person that is uh
2:46
willing to learn something from what is
2:49
shared with you
2:51
that you take Serious the opportunity to
2:53
learn
2:54
your uncle
2:56
the word but you're young
2:59
is uh sometimes uh applied to the adult
3:07
is the way that it is said
3:10
means the one that is an adult
3:13
and can supervise young people and then
3:16
the teaching as its first given is
3:19
usually to the person taking care of a
3:22
livestock or as a sheep
3:25
it means to care for the Sheep the word
3:28
yeah
3:30
which would mean you be the Thinker for
3:33
the livestock
3:35
would be the other way to say it but
3:37
they say it in most cases
3:40
which means
3:43
and so the teaching of what's your uncle
3:47
is to say that uh learn learn the things
3:51
that you need to know so that you can
3:53
make a life for yourself
3:55
and so when you're going to school and
3:58
you are sitting in a setting where
4:00
you're to learn something
4:03
the old people always used to encourage
4:05
us you know
4:06
when they're young though that means you
4:09
will absorb the things that you need to
4:10
know so you can become an adult that
4:13
takes time that takes effort to learn
4:15
and learn as much as you can about all
4:18
types of situations in life
4:22
and the preparation for this particular
4:25
subject
4:27
we had the opportunity to speak with a
4:29
lot of different uh
4:30
other people that have heard these uh
4:33
lessons about what younger
4:37
iani
4:39
and it is very important that they say
4:42
that uh
4:43
that is something that is given to
4:45
everybody throughout their life we've
4:47
been trying to determine what would be a
4:48
good translation
4:50
and uh we talked with the other people
4:54
and they always expressed the idea that
4:57
um the real danger to the net
5:01
is uh probably not learning
5:05
and it is that it can affect their lives
5:08
in a negative ways
5:09
and so the teaching is that
5:12
um
5:16
that means they're learning and that and
5:18
to becoming a person there that uh
5:22
can take care of themselves and gain
5:24
knowledge it's all up to you
5:27
is what it comes down to
5:30
but when you're very young and they tell
5:33
you you know to take care of the Sheep
5:36
that means you think for the animal and
5:39
so now you have to think for yourself
5:41
and you're and so the greatest danger
5:44
that they say
5:46
yes
5:48
that means something like a prophecy
5:50
that in the future
5:53
our people are going to begin to lack
5:55
the
5:56
responsibility of knowing of learning
5:59
and applying it in their lives properly
6:02
so the greatest danger they tell us is
6:05
something like ignorance
6:07
ignorance is very dangerous towards the
6:09
net and so there is so much to know and
6:11
there's so much to understand and
6:13
there's so much to be aware of
6:16
and ignorance is uh a choice
6:19
and it's a choice that is very dangerous
6:21
we have all of the opportunities to
6:24
learn and so there's no excuse for the
6:26
uh the things for not knowing the things
6:28
we need to know but the other thing that
6:31
they say is that of ignorance
6:33
and that of not knowing
6:36
we're choosing not to know
6:38
and then of course uh when the time
6:40
comes you don't know how to uh to deal
6:43
with situations so the teaching is
6:45
ignorance is dangerous and it is that uh
6:49
what means right before your eyes these
6:52
things happen you have to be able to
6:55
understand what's going on
6:57
and if you choose to be ignorant you'll
7:01
ignore those things and it'll lead you
7:03
in the wrong direction
7:07
that means you must use your power of
7:11
thinking
7:12
and planning
7:13
and in doing in a way we are told
7:15
there's no excuse
7:18
and not knowing the things that are
7:19
important that make life there is
7:21
absolutely no excuse to avoid the idea
7:25
of learning things you need to know to
7:27
how to make your life
7:29
and of course there's no excuse in not
7:32
knowing what the holy people want you to
7:34
do there is absolutely no excuse to
7:37
avoid and not do what the holy people
7:39
have told us and the teachings that are
7:42
preserved in the traditional ways other
7:45
than that
7:46
and then you also have to be on an
7:49
individual level you have to be
7:51
aware
7:53
and don't be ignorant to the idea that
7:55
there are people that are that are in
7:57
the world that will lie to you
7:59
and they will sound so convincing
8:01
that they will take and say okay
8:04
I'm going to take their advice and
8:06
follow them and it is very important to
8:09
understand that we cannot be ignorant
8:12
to those things and there's no excuse
8:15
for
8:16
knowing the dangers not knowing the
8:18
dangers of Envy greed
8:21
hate and killing
8:24
there is no excuse
8:25
and not knowing the dangers of those
8:28
types of of behavior
8:30
and they
8:31
idea that there is no excuse for not
8:35
knowing the past history of our people
8:37
the past history of your clan Ben died
8:40
of Kiss ask about it better holds ah
8:43
learn about it there's no excuse
8:48
and then of course the very last thing
8:50
and I always remember the old people
8:52
would say is that uh
8:57
that means that when you have become an
8:59
adult and you have children and a family
9:01
you take care of them
9:03
you do not need to be ignorant
9:06
about the responsibility of being a
9:10
father or a mother and being a good and
9:12
doing your very best to be a good father
9:15
to be a good mother
9:19
that means you do not let yourself
9:21
become ignorant
9:23
and that's going to be the things that
9:25
you have to be responsible for in your
9:28
life so you don't have excuses you
9:30
eliminate the excuses and you know how
9:32
to deal with the uh the things you have
9:34
to do
9:35
and making your life
9:38
is the way that they used to tell us
9:44
and that is the way that they used to
9:46
tell us and those are the things that we
9:48
are told
9:48
