The rise and fall of SenseTime and its face recognition technology

Chinese AI company, SenseTime, was one of the most valuable Chinese unicorn companies and the darling of Wall Street investors. Its founder, Tang Xiao-ou, was called the “father of Chinese AI” for his groundbreaking face recognition technology. In retrospect, the company was doomed to fail. Amid the US-China tech war, SenseTime couldn’t survive the US chip ban targeting Chinese tech companies. Tang’s death at age 55 caused much speculation and reflection. The story shows the ultimate challenge Chinese high-tech companies face in global competition.
