The tradition is popularly thought to be associated with Kabbalah and religious forms of Judaism, though it has also been worn by practitioners of Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.

The red string itself is usually made from thin scarlet wool thread. It is worn as a bracelet or band on the wrist of the wearer. Madonna, Ariana Grande, Demi Moore and Leonardo DiCaprio are among celebrities spotted wearing a red string bracelet.
