Claude Debussy – The Engulfed Cathedral (Saxophone Choir + 3 Piccolos & 2 Contrabassoons)

This is the 10th Prelude of Volume 1 of Debussy’s Preludes for piano.

This piece depicts the rising of a submerged cathedral. It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea.

This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.

This arrangement by Richard Byrnes is for 3 Piccolos, Flute, 3 Soprano Saxes, 2 Alto Saxes, 2 Tenor Saxes, Baritone Sax, Bass Sax, & 2 Contrabassoons.
