The okapi, sometimes called the forest giraffe or African unicorn, lives in the dense rainforests of the Congo. They have elongated necks and a rear striped body that looks like a giraffe-zebra hybrid. The okapi’s chocolate brown coat with white stripes on its legs and hindquarters provides good camouflage. They’re herbivores, feeding on a variety of leaves, buds, grasses, ferns, fruit, and fungi. Okapis have long, grasping tongues to reach hidden leaves high in the trees. After about 15 months, okapi mothers have a single calf that’s able to walk just 30 minutes after birth.
