In any society, it is far easier to concentrate power than knowledge. The problem with intellectuals is that they believe they have all of the knowledge, and therefore should exercise the power. As Thomas Sowell points out, however, the reality is that intellectuals can never know as much as they think they do, as society is complicated. This is the folly of intellectuals, as they believe that their mastery of one aspect of life justifies them to step out of their area of expertise and exercise power. In essence, they feel they can use the Ring of Power from Lord of the Rings for good, when they cannot. This hubris of intellectuals frequently leads to disaster. During the covid pandemic, Bill Gates was a perfect example of what Thomas Sowell is talking about. In the area of software development his knowledge is formidable. However, that knowledge did not transfer over to public health which is why he recommended counter-productive policies that made things worse. This video includes clips from Thomas Sowell, appearing on Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson, Bill Gates himself, clips from the Jimmy Dore show, The Joe Rogan Experience, and the movie the Lord of the Rings related to the Ring of Power.
