During World War II Brunswick was home to a short-lived but vital industry. More than 16,000 civilians (including many women) were employed to build ships. Specifically a certain class of cargo ship called a "Liberty Ship". After the war ended so did Brunswick's ship building. Sadly, only one of these vessels seem to still exist. It's moored in Baltimore. Any surviving cargo ship were met with an unceremonious end. Many were simply scrapped. Others turned into man-made underwater reefs.
