He quickly distinguished himself as a talented vocalist, earning a coveted spot as one of only two males to sing with the legendary Clara Ward Singers. Lewis's transition from gospel to secular music came when he auditioned for The Drifters at Philadelphia's Uptown Theater. Remarkably, he sang with the Clara Ward Singers right up to the day before his audition. His raw talent and undeniable charisma caught the attention of Drifters manager George Treadwell, who hired Lewis on the spot to be the group's lead vocalist.

Stepping into the shoes of the iconic Ben E. King, Lewis embraced the role of lead vocalist with aplomb, performing most of King's repertoire live in concert. His smooth and emotive vocals breathed new life into classic Drifters hits, earning him accolades from fans and critics alike.
