Here’s why I think the draft might come back

For 50 years, the U.S. has been able to meet national security challenges with its all-volunteer force — but just barely.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan stretched the volunteer military thin, despite the constant mobilization of reservists to active duty and the enlistment of local allies. And those enemies were just insurgents.

Writing for the Atlantic in July, military analysts Jason Dempsey and Gil Barndollar contend that a “major conflict would break” the volunteer military, calling it “an open secret in defense circles.”

Those desert wars were small compared to the types of global challenges America faces today.

Not to mention our entire military-industrial complex is custom-built for smaller, more frequent conflicts. The doctrine of the 21st Century has been high technology, precision strikes, and fewer troops.

This is evident by the fact that it took the U.S. only two years to go through much of our stockpile in assisting Ukraine - at least, according to USAF Gen. James Hecker.

Our defense industry could, in theory, ramp up production for munitions in an existential crisis - after all, "we are the arsenal of democracy".

But to do the same with troops would require a draft.

Could the U.S. face a simultaneous, two-to-three-front war with China in the Pacific and Russia and Iran in the Middle East and Europe?

Not with the current volunteer force, no.

A big war, against countries that have technology on par, or close to us, and have standing armies, navies, and air power, would absolutely require some sort of compulsory military service in the United States.
