Restaurant Brings The Chef To Front Window To Cut Up A Deer Leg In Front Of Vegan Activst Nut Cases
Restaurant hilariously brings the chef to the front window to cut up a deer leg in front of vegan activst nut cases' After enduring weeks of relentless protests from vegan activists outside his nose-to-tail bistro, chef Michael Hunter of Toronto's Antler Kitchen & Bar decided to make a bold statement in response. Hunter, feeling the pressure of the ongoing demonstrations, opted to confront the activists directly by butchering a freshly-killed deer's leg in full view of the demonstrators from the restaurant's window. "I figured, I'll show them," Hunter expressed to writer Corey Mintz. "I'm going to have my own protest." The contentious feud ignited late last year when an Antler staff member playfully displayed a chalkboard sign outside the restaurant reading, "Venison is the new kale." Although intended as a light-hearted jab at a neighboring eatery, the message did not sit well with vegan activist Marni Ugar, who leads a dog-walking business in the area.
Ugar promptly organized a small protest, gathering approximately six individuals in front of Antler with signs condemning speciesism and advocating for animal rights. Their message aimed to challenge the notion that consuming pasture-raised, hormone-free meat, as offered by Chef Hunter, is ethically superior to consuming commodity meat in the long term. Despite Hunter's attempts to appease the activists by advertising vegan options on the restaurant's sandwich board, the protests persisted. "The goal always is for a restaurant to go fully vegan," Ugar asserted to Mintz. "To reduce the animals they kill, for me, isn't good enough." As winter continued and the protests showed no signs of abating, Hunter grew increasingly concerned about the impact on his business. "I just felt helpless," he lamented. "It's hurting our business. I hoped it would fizzle out and go away."
However, when the demonstrators escalated their chants to include accusations of "murderer" every time the restaurant door opened, Hunter felt compelled to take action. It was then that he conceived the idea of showcasing the deer leg in the window as a defiant response to the activists.
