A Pileated Woodpecker is one of the biggest woodpeckers in North America. It’s nearly the size of a crow. They whack at dead trees and fallen logs in search of insects. They leave unique rectangular holes in the wood which provide nest holes for many species including swifts, owls, ducks, bats, and pine martens. In this video, you can hear another pileated woodpecker whacking at a nearby fallen log.
