How does the Soyuz Spacecraft work ?

The Soyuz spacecraft, a symbol of Russian space exploration prowess, operates on a time-tested and reliable design that has facilitated countless missions into space. This iconic vessel consists of three main sections: the Orbital Module, the Descent Module, and the Instrumentation/Propulsion Module.

During launch, the Soyuz rocket propels the spacecraft into orbit, after which the Descent Module, housing the crew, detaches from the rocket's upper stage. Following a precise orbital maneuver, the Soyuz docks with the International Space Station (ISS), allowing astronauts to transfer safely between the two vehicles.

Upon completion of their mission, the crew re-enters the Descent Module and prepares for re-entry. The spacecraft's heat shield protects it from the intense heat generated during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. Once through the fiery descent, parachutes deploy to slow the Soyuz's descent, ensuring a gentle landing on the Kazakh steppe.
