Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus Icon - Time Lapse Painting

This time lapse video shows my process of Icon painting, or "writing" as most traditional Iconographers call the process. Writing an Icon can and should be a prayerful process for the artist. Traditional Catholics and Orthodox Christians do not view Icons as idol worship. All religious art is made and displayed in order to lift the soul to God. Think of it as a big neon sign saying "pray here" drawing your heart and mind towards God by attracting your senses towards him so that your soul can be closer to Him.

The same way we do not worship icons, we neither worship Mary or other saints. Their images are much like the photos of our family we have on our walls. The saints are our family in heaven. Just like we might ask our brothers and sisters on earth to pray for us when we are in need, we can also ask our family of saints in heaven to pray for us.
