Hypertension & diabetes mellitus
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against the walls of your arteries is consistently too high. This can lead to various health issues, including heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and other complications.
Diabetes mellitus, often referred to simply as diabetes, is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of blood glucose (sugar), either because the body doesn't produce enough insulin or because the cells don't respond to the insulin that is produced. There are different types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Both hypertension and diabetes are considered major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. They often coexist, and having one condition can worsen the other. For example, having diabetes increases the risk of developing hypertension, and having hypertension increases the risk of complications in people with diabetes.
Managing both conditions typically involves lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, and medication if necessary. It's also important for individuals with these conditions to monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar levels regularly and to work closely with healthcare providers to prevent complications and maintain overall health.
