Okarche police arrested a suspect who said he had drank "maybe one 12-pack" after he was caught driving the wrong way on a highway in Okarche over the weekend.

Shortly before midnight on Saturday, an Okarche police officer pulled over a person driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 81.

"Thanks to Officer Vincent's swift action, a potential catastrophe was averted, and potential lives saved," Okarche Police Chief Forrest Smith said.

The Facebook post included a video of the arrest, showing the suspect saying he was driving after having "maybe one 12-pack."

"How much have you had to drink tonight?" Vincent asked the suspect.

"Uhhh, maybe one 12-pack, maybe," the suspect responded.

Vincent then made the suspect aware that he was driving on the wrong side of the road.

"See the road over there? That's where you're supposed to be. You're on the wrong side of the road," Vincent said.

While arresting the suspect, Vincent told him, "You could have killed somebody tonight."

The Okarche Police Department says officers have responded to a DUI incident every 9.5 days, calling the trend "unacceptable."

"I want to emphasize that Driving Under the Influence will face severe consequences," Smith said. "There are numerous alternatives available for individuals who have consumed alcohol, and endangering lives with irresponsible driving will not be tolerated."
