Spices and a word of caution on sugar content

Many times we get a “steak seasoning,” “burger seasoning,” “seasoning salt,” etc and expect it to be just that. A mix of mostly salt, maybe pepper and various herbs and whatnot.

Oftentimes, not unlike supplements with some “special sauce” that tested athletes will pop hot for, many seasonings “secret ingredient” is sugar.

Sugar isn’t the devil, and of minimal concern depending on your insulin sensitivity but sugar in granular or powder form is dangerous because it’s difficult to meter out. You can’t tell how much extra sugar you’re coating your food with when it’s in your favorite steak seasoning.

This is why I pour my sauces in a “dipper,” and not all over my food. Despite my activity level and insulin sensitivity, I still don’t want random, unregulated amounts of sugar in my diet.

So, READ LABELS folks. Make sure your favorite spice isn’t that because it’s basically sugary herbs and salt. It might be why you can’t drop those last few pounds. Or why when you eat X food at Y restaurant you get all bloated and puffy.

Not a massive lever but again, “action over time.” Small things can have tremendous impacts if repeated over days, weeks, months and years.
