The Sign Of Jonah

The Word of the Lord came to Jonah. “Go to Nineveh.” But Jonah would have none of it. In fact Jonah ran in exactly the opposite direction.

So he pays his money for a bunk on a second rate cruise ship.
Jonah is tired. He finds his bunk in steerage and falls fast asleep.

Soon, there’s a storm come upon the little cruise ship. His lads are upon the top deck wondering who they should throw overboard.
“This storm came out of nowhere. It must be somebody’s fault!”

Jonah comes topside and asks whatever are you all yelling about?

Jonah asks rhetorically. “Who caused this storm?”

Jonah then answered his own question
“Its me, I’m supposed to go to Nineveh but I’m running from God right now.
So, fellas, you may as well throw me into the drink.”

And after a little while they threw Jonah into icy black water. The storm was abated for the sailors but not for Jonah. Jonah’s journey of discovery was just beginning.

God caused a very large fish to swallow Jonah. With one fell swoop, a gulp and a wriggle into the belly.

Jonah wasn’t in the belly of fish for a waxing but he got the treatment anyway.

And with the ending of the prayer of Jonah, the great fish vomited Jonah on the Beaches of Nineveh. Splat, that was rude. . .

So Nineveh was every bit as large as Gotham City. A big big place with people and shops on every corner.

So Jonah starts projecting his voice. “You’ve got 40 days and this place is burnt toast!
Repent of your sins, posthaste!”

The people believed Jonah and dressed down. They took off their presumptions, they dropped their disbelief, the people decided, en masse, it was better to live a resolute God filled life than have no life at all.

[There may have even been a full solar eclipse as a visual aid for Jonah’s message. A total solar eclipse on June 15, 763BC about the same time Jonah went to Nineveh.]

When the King of Nineveh heard the message he took off his vestiges of favor. The King humbled himself as merely a sinner, without any recourse; except through belief in Jonah’s God.

So the King took out his Official Royal Decree Book. Executive Proclamation # 3.14159.

And when God saw the seriousness of their prayers. How they were not only abandoning sin in their hearts but by the deeds of their hands proved their solemnity.

So Jonah, decided to go out to live off grid. “
“As if, anyone would miss me.” Jonah opined.
Plus he was afraid the stench of Nineveh would not wash off.

So Jonah bought a few square feet of good tarpaulin and some two bys to set up a lean-to facing downtown Nineveh city.

Jonah was, of the mistaken belief; once God got to really see what an unhinged bunch Hueman flesh He just converted.
God will come to the same conclusion. These Huemans are treacherous.

Maybe you God will yet bomb these bastards “the Ninevites”.

So Jonah begins complaining; by telling God. “This is why I didn’t want to come here.”

“They’ve all been converted.
And I knew, on the off-hand chance the Ninevites saw things your way.
You would do the same thing you do every time people confess and abandon their sins.”

“You will forgive them.”

“Why don’t you just do me in, Lord. The world will be a better place without me.” Said Jonah, as he struggled to pull the back of his hand, from off of his forehead.

Then God said. “Do you think you have a good reason to pout?”

So God prepared a plant which grew up tall enough to give shade to Jonah.
“So, this is what retirement is all-about.” Jonah said exuberantly!

And no sooner had he went to bed under the leafy plant than the worm of inflation came along.

The leafy rich retirees are left leafless.

So, the retired Jonah went to bed depressed; again……… While he slept, he dreamed of a great storm.

When he awoke from the dream, he realized the nightmare was a far better option than the reality of his true condition.
“Woe am I. I should eat worms, suck on persimmons and pronounce a death sentence on my own flesh.”

It is better for me to die than to live.” Says Jonah Eeyore.

All the while the effects of the persimmons puckered his lips.
Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have a good reason to be angry about the loss of the plant?”

And Jonah answered God, with his lips puckered from a persimmon. The perception is that of fish gulping air to say. “I have a very good reason to be angry, angry enough to die!”

Then the Lord said, “You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.”

God says to Jonah. “Should I not have compassion on the people of Nineveh. This is why you are acting out; isn’t it?”
Just because Jonah may be a servant of God. This does not mean he is mature.

Not waiting for an answer God continued to admonish Jonah.

“A great city in which there are more than 120,000 innocent persons.
Admittedly they are so spiritually daft, they can hardly tell right from wrong.”

The Ninevites are a simple folk,
salt of the earth types.
They hadn’t given sinning much thought, but as soon as the Law about Sin was seen, then the Law sought to smother their spirit.

Just doing the Do’s and avoiding the Do Nots never gave a soul any peace.
When is enough works enough! Done in your own strength.

Only God’s Love and Mercy does what the Law could never do.
He empowers us with the want to please God, because he loves us. He loved us long before we loved him.

Jonah learned the lesson(s) of repentance, he was running away from God,
God used Nineveh to equally convert Jonah.

When God finally got him arrested and thrown to the sharks.

Jonah has a Near Death Experience in the belly of the fish. What’s on the other side of a Near Death Experience-a Personal Revival?

A renewal of motivation, a regaining of strength, a retrieval of sight!
And maybe its all four simultaneously.
He sees where he went wrong.

When Jonah finally has an
Epiphany, about deep deep repentance.

He will then and then only
will he be able to lecture on
“the about-face,
the life turnaround.
I’m walking one way.
I about-face and walk
in the opposite direction
back towards God.,
back towards Nineveh.
that is Repentance”

Go towards Nineveh If that’s where God has called you.
