"Continual hatred for one nation/continual fondness for another...(Pres Washington Farewell Address)

"Nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate, antipathy against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded (from government)....The nation which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interests". President George Washington (1732-99), on 17 September 1796: Farewell Address. "Observe good faith and justice towards all nations".
As he approached the end of his second term as President in 1796, George Washington, aafter forty-five years of public service, was mentally and physically exhausted and tired of the personal attacks on him. His thoughts turned to retirement and he conceived the idea of bequeathing to Americans a legacy of the ideas that inspired him. He warns ox extremism in political parties (factions), habitual hatred towards one nation, habitual affection for another; for the union of the whole nation.
