At the Paris, Tennessee Henry County Court house I discovered this VERY SIGNIFICANT history of our nations laws. In 1830, a significant legal case unfolded in Henry County, Tennessee, known as Grainger vs. State of Tennessee. This case played a crucial role in establishing the “Law of Self-Defense” nationwide. The incident involved a killing in Henry County, and its legal proceedings set a precedent for self-defense as a basis for appeal. Here are two abstracts from the 1830 case.
"If a man, though in no great danger of serious bodily harm, through fear, alarm or cowardice, kill another under the impression that great bodily injury is about to be inflicted upon him, it is neither manslaughter nor murder, but self-defence.

"If a man be in great danger of bodily harm, or thinks himself so, and kill another, it will be a killing in self-defence.
There is so much more to share about this case and the background historical records from the court case. Fascinating!
