The Hope Saw Mill in Peterborough County was originally built as a carding and fulling mill on the Indian River, a mile north of the village of Lang in 1835.

Another sawmill down the river in Lang burned in 1873 and shortly thereafter, William and his son-in-law Richard Hope added a saw house to their mill.

By the 1890s,the wool and carding business was discontinued and the Hope family provided much-needed lumbering services to the area until 1966.

The original sawmill and wood-finishing equipment have been fully restored and there is a wood-working museum.

During the summer months, you can watch the equipment cut and finish lumber just like it was done by pioneers in the area.

The mission of the Hope Mill is to preserve and promote knowledge of 19th century water-powered wool and lumber milling technology through the safe demonstration of operating heritage equipment and sharing of historical archives while fostering a cooperative environment for Hope Mill volunteers.
