Large Stingray Takes A Casual Stroll Around Marina
A large yacht marina, plenty of cafés and a relaxed atmosphere is how Playa Blanca can be described. The coastline around Playa Blanca is essentially one large 5.5-mile wide bay which is then broken up into three smaller, but still large, bays. The beaches in and around Playa Blanca are sheltered and ideal for swimming and sunbathing. And if you are a tourist there, you may occasionally witness large stingrays appearing out of nowhere. It happened for the guy in this video and the view is so majestic.
The flat-bodied, disk-shaped ray has a slim and a very long, tapering and whip-like tail armed with one saw-edged, sharp and flexible venomous spine. Though related to her shark cousin, this stingray with her wide body, it may not look like fish but it is. It is also called a whip-tailed ray or Stingaree and it inhabits all oceans and certain South American rivers. It obviously prefers shallow, near-shore water which is warmer because it is a bottom dweller and lies partially buried in the shallows. Her color matches the sand it hides in.
This stingray has broad fins that run the full length of its body, giving it her flat, roundish shape. It swims by moving her whole body in a wavy motion that propels her through the water.
Stingrays eat worms, mollusks, and other invertebrates, sometimes badly damaging valuable shellfish beds. They lash their tails when stepped on, and large stingrays can exert enough force to drive their tail spines into a wooden boat. The spines cause serious, extremely painful wounds that, if abdominal, may result in death.
