The Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse in 1980 was a tragic event in Florida’s history. On May 9, 1980, the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support column during a sudden squall, causing a 1,200-foot section of the bridge to collapse into Tampa Bay. This disaster resulted in the loss of 35 lives, as several vehicles, including a Greyhound bus, plunged into the water.
The storm that morning brought extremely limited visibility and high winds, which contributed to the difficulty of navigating the ship. After the collision, efforts were made to improve the safety of the bridge. The original bridge, part of Interstate 275 and U.S. Route 19, spanned the bay between St. Petersburg and Terra Ceia. The new #Sunshine #Skyway #Bridge, completed in 1987, was designed with enhanced safety #features, including large concrete barriers to prevent similar accidents. The new #design is also considered architecturally striking, and it has since become an iconic symbol of the #Tampa #Bay #area.
