I was in 12th when I fell in love with Rohan & found out I was pregnant. I was scared & unsure of what to do. Rohan suggested we get married. I believed naively– it was the right decision.

I introduced him to my family, & after doing some inquiries, they agreed. We got married when I was 4 months pregnant. Until then, no one knew. When I told my mother-in-law, she started mistreating me. She’d drink & abuse me.

Rohan changed, too. He became abusive, both physically & emotionally—he didn’t even care I was pregnant. I fell into a deep depression & thought of ending my life, but the growing baby inside me stopped me.

Then, for delivery, I went to my mother’s home. On delivery day, he didn’t bother to come to the hospital. After 7–8 hours of Vidhi’s birth, he appeared. Vidhi was a special child. He & his mother didn’t want a girl. They were unhappy.

After a month, I asked him, “When are you taking us home?” He said, “We’re building a new home; after that, we’ll shift there together.” I waited for 7 months. One day I got a call from his neighbor, “Aren’t you shifting to the new home? They are throwing your things outside.”

Confused & hurt, I went there with my family. My mother-in-law said, “There is no space for you & your Beti in our new home.” I called Rohan, & he said he was coming. I was hopeful. But, he took me to his room & refused to keep his promise. When I questioned him, he pushed me & started beating me.

When I cried for help, my brothers & mom came to my rescue, & the fight got intense. Then Rohan filed a false case against my brothers. He claimed I wanted his property, & when he refused, her brothers tried to kill me. I was devastated!

I sought the help of the human rights courts & also filed a domestic violence case against them. I sold my jewelry to bail out my brothers.

I was broken & dead inside. I could only see the everlasting darkness. Vidhi only kept me going. My family was with me. To divert my mind, I joined a Mandal & played Dhol tasha pathak.
