A huge bridge has collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, after a container ship crashed into the structure in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Authorities have declared a “mass casualty event” with as many as 20 people feared to be in the water and desperate rescue efforts currently under way in a race against the clock.

Terrifying video footage captured the moment the Singapore vessel Dali slammed into the 1.6-mile, four-lane Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending it tumbling into the water.

Multiple cars are thought to have been crossing over the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.

Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, told The Associated Press that agencies starteed receiving 911 calls around 1.30am ET.
