The main cathedral of the Don Cossacks in Novocherkassk, Rostov region.

In 1805, Ataman Matvey Ivanovich Platov founded the new capital of the Don Cossacks - Novocherkassk. Together with the support of the city, the Ascension Cathedral was founded. Now, instead of the Resurrection Cathedral in the village of Starocherkasskaya, it has become the main temple for the Cossacks.

The cathedral could not be completed - the churches collapsed. Many Cossacks were against moving the capital to Novocherkassk and considered it familiar, but in 1904 the architect Alexander Yashchenko managed to build a temple in the neo-Byzantine style.

The height of the temple is more than 70 meters. It was considered the third temple in the Empire, after St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
