The Essenes were a Jewish sect that lived in Ancient Judea during the Second Temple period, which lasted from the 5th century BCE to the 1st century CE. The Essenes were known for their ascetic lifestyle, which included a strict adherence to ritual purity, communal living, and a vegetarian diet. They also had a strong focus on spiritual contemplation, meditation, and the study of the scriptures.

The Essenes are best known for their association with the Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of ancient Jewish texts discovered in caves near Qumran in the mid-20th century. The scrolls include biblical and non-biblical texts, as well as community rules and regulations, shedding light on the religious beliefs and practices of the Essenes. The Essenes are also believed to have had an influence on the development of early Christianity, with some suggesting they knew that Yeshua would be born and were waiting for him to incarnate.
