In this podcast, we talk to former US Ambassador Charles Freeman about who controls US foreign policy. We start with his provocative claim that Israel is not a US ally and his argument that Israel has been a liability for the US instead of an ally. We asked him what factors influence the trajectory of US foreign policy. We then discuss Israeli atrocity in Gaza placing the conflict in the larger politics of the Middle East. We also asked him about the divisions within the Arab and the Islamic world in the Middle East. We also discussed the West's continued hostility to Russia. Freeman argues that Europe should build its own defense system and become independent from the US. We feared this would further widen the asymmetry between the West and the Global Majority. Freeman denied it because he argued that the long-term domination of countries in the Global South with military force is more or less over. Finally, we concluded by asking what made him empathetic to people, despite being a high official within the US state. He said that realpolitik must have moral limits.
