Heaviest man in human history
Jon Brower Minnoch, born on September 29, 1941, in Bainbridge Island, holds the remarkable distinction of being both the man who lost the most weight in recorded history and the heaviest individual ever documented. His journey with weight fluctuation is unparalleled, marked by astonishing figures and medical challenges.
Even in his early years, Minnoch's weight was a concern, with reports indicating he tipped the scales at 132 kilograms by the age of 12. By the time he reached 22 in September 1976, he stood at 1.85 meters tall but carried a staggering 178 kilograms.
Struggling with respiratory and cardiac issues attributed to his weight, Minnoch was admitted to Seattle University Hospital in Washington. Dr. Robert Schwartz, an endocrinologist, estimated his weight to exceed a staggering 635 kilograms, largely due to severe water retention.
Following a strict diet limited to 1,200 calories a day for nearly two years, Minnoch experienced a remarkable transformation, shedding an astonishing 419 kilograms, reaching a low of 216 kilograms. However, his battle with weight was far from over.
Requiring an extraordinary effort for transportation, Minnoch's medical needs during transit were significant. It took a team of a dozen firefighters and emergency personnel, along with a specially modified stretcher and a ferry, to transport him to Seattle Hospital.
Throughout his hospitalization, Minnoch required specialized care, including being placed on two beds joined together, and a team of 13 individuals tasked with changing his bedding due to his inability to move easily.
After 16 months of enduring a restrictive diet, Minnoch emerged from the hospital weighing 216 kilograms, having shed excess extracellular fluid at a remarkable rate of 5 to 7 kilograms per week. This achievement earned him recognition in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's thinnest man.
However, Minnoch's battle with his condition proved relentless. Despite his monumental weight loss, his underlying edema remained untreatable and challenging to manage. Tragically, he passed away 23 months later, on September 10, 1983, at the age of 42, with a weight of 362 kilograms and a staggering body mass index of 105.3.
Throughout his life, Minnoch shared two children with his wife, Jeannette, who remained steadfastly supportive despite the extraordinary challenges they faced together. Their story remains one of resilience and the enduring struggle against an overwhelming condition.
