Man held in Orange County Sheriff's Psychiatric Ward Chokes on Piece of Orange and Dies

On Wednesday, December 23, 2022, Whiting was placed into a cell in the psychiatric observation unit. Between 1514 - 1520 hours, Jail surveillance footage captured Whiting as he began to force-feed himself in the cell. Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies and jail medical staff were alerted to the cell and found Whiting in distress. Life saving measures were initiated, and Whiting was transported to a local hospital. Whiting was pronounced deceased a short time later.
