- Sudan's civil war has plunged the country into "one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history", according to UN officials who met this week to discuss the situation. For nearly a year, Sudan's military and its former ally, the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, have been battling over the country's capital and other nearby cities. Civilians caught up in the recent fighting have given graphic accounts of rape, ethnic violence and street executions. At least 14,000 people have been killed so far.
