Discover Jungfraujoch: A Journey to Europe's Rooftop | Switzerland Travel Guide
A visit to Jungfraujoch is an unforgettable experience, offering a breathtaking view of the Swiss Alps rugged terrain. The journey to the top is equally thrilling, with a train ride that passes through picturesque Swiss villages and landscapes. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by the icy mountain air and crunchy snow underfoot. The view from the top is awe-inspiring, with one side offering a panoramic view of the Swiss Mittelland towards the Vosges, while the other side showcases the Aletsch Glacier, flanked by majestic mountains. Standing at 3,454 meters above sea level, visitors can feel the difference in this unique world. It's an experience that one must have to appreciate fully.
The pioneering work of the mountain railways is evident in the Jungfrau Railway, which has been transporting visitors since 1912 through the Eiger and Mönch mountains to Europe's highest railway station. The Swiss Alps Jungfraujoch-Aletsch is the first natural heritage site of the Alpine region, recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can travel to the eponymous rock formation on the Jungfraujoch in greater comfort, thanks to the ultra-fast lift that takes them to the observatory, an international research station. They can enjoy the view without worrying about the riddles left to the explorers.
Just ten minutes from the Jungfraujoch railway station, visitors can reach the Plateau, the coolest hotspot in the Alps. The vantage platform offers a view of the Mittelland as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges, while the other side provides a glimpse of the Aletsch Glacier, bordered by majestic peaks. It's the best view visitors can get in the Alps. Once visitors have had their fill, they can explore more attractions around Europe's highest railway station or enjoy a refreshing meal in one of the restaurants.
A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250-meter-long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. The frosty temperatures are not the only reason for this, but also the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. Thirty memorial tablets bear witness to their hard work. The music played in the background on the way also brings back the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Visitors can feel relieved when they reach the end of the experience and pose in front of the giant snow globe, saying, "I made it!"
A day trip to Jungfraujoch is undoubtedly the highlight of any Swiss excursion.
