Why do they want to ban TikTok?

Recently, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that could see TikTok banned in America. If the bill passes in the Senate and is signed into law by Joe Biden, it would force the social media's parent company to sell its controlling stake or be blocked in the US.
There are many people championing this potential ban, claiming that the reason for it is that TikTok poses a risk to the data of US users or that it should be banned because it is corrupting the minds of children.
Both of those things are true: TikTok does put user data at risk, and there is no doubt that TikTok is a platform destined to influence the minds of young people with destructive ideas. But regardless, TikTok should not be banned—not because it is good, but because it is the lesser of two evils. Banning TikTok has nothing to do with protecting user data or safeguarding children's minds; this bill is only about control. Who will control TikTok? Social media shapes and controls the opinions of society; those who control social media control the narrative.
This bill, if it becomes law, will set the precedent for legal censorship and the erosion of First Amendment rights.
