Today we’re reading Psalm 113 – which is the first of 5 Psalms 113—118 known as the Hallel Psalms, or simply the Hallel (Hallel means “praise” and it’s where we get the word Hallelujah!). These Hallel Psalms are essentially expressions of thanksgiving and joy for divine redemption. And While many psalms praise God, this set of psalms became associated with Passover due the mention of the deliverance from Egypt in Psalm 114. These psalms were recited at Jewish feasts, especially Passover with one or two of the psalms being recited before the meal, and the rest after.

This group of Hallel Psalms should be of special interest to us because in all probability, these psalms were sung by our Lord Jesus and His disciples on that dark night in which He was betrayed.” Matthew 26:30, and Mark 14:26, demonstrate this when they refer to the hymn which Jesus and his disciples sung at the passover.

MT 26:27And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
30Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
MK14:23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. 25I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
