Since 12 years ago today I was walking up hills in Afghanistan, at least before getting blown up (more on that later) I opted to hit up the Stepmill and give the Bike a break.

This model doesn’t have a Wattage reading so instead I utilize Steps Per Minute to achieve the appropriate intensity. 117 Steps per Minute is roughly Level-16 or 17 on the Matrix model Stepmill, which puts me at just over 300 Watts at 70+ Kilograms or 4+ Watts/Kg. This way I guarantee I’m operating at the intensity required for the desired training effect.

Additionally, I can at least get an accurate step count by just walking a full hour and so 60 x 117 = 7020 Steps. With my 3+ Mile/6750+ Step Standard, I know I’m getting in the desired training volume.

The Lifefitness model doesn’t account for people like me who will stay on it entirely too long so the Kcal counter stops before I do. In order to have any metrics at all, however inaccurate they may be, I have to track what it says at 30:00 Minutes and then just double it. This Kcal number is likely quite off but I track it the same way you’d track daily weight on an uncalibrated scale. The value is off but if you use the same measuring device, the relationship between values will be useful to establish trends.

Train with intent and be a thinking athlete. Any exercise is better than no exercise but it’s 2024. We can do better than just breaking a sweat and moving around to burn arbitrary calories 🤷🏿♂️
