Obesity represents one of the major public health concerns of our time. And researchers are testing a new vaccine that targets a virus that causes obesity in children. Are you familiar with the epidemic of obesity in 1980 both in developed and undeveloped countries? Have you ever heard of adenovirus type 36? Adenovirus type 36 is the virus identified to be responsible for the epidemic obesity in 1980 and to date, is still associated with human obesity. In the year 2001, the term "infectobesity" was coined by Dr. Nikhil V. Dhurandhar, at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Infectobesity refers to obesity of infectious origin, and seems to be an overlooked origin of obesity. And there are five infectious agents implicated in contributing to obesity, besides adenovirus type 36, we have canine distemper virus, rous associated virus, and Borna disease virus. Among these different types of viruses, adenoviruses are the only infective agents reported to be linked with adiposity. Adenoviruses are medium size viruses that contain double-stranded D-N-A molecule. Adenovirus type 36 is adipogenic in animals. In an experiment, after transfusion of a small amount of blood from a chicken infected with adenovirus 36 caused the infection to another animal, sharing the same cage and the animals became obese. Pasarica et al. Have demonstrated that rats infected with Adenovirus 36 had an increase of weight, insulin sensitivity, and glucose uptake. How is Adenovirus 37 associated with obesity? It increases glucose uptake and promotes chronic inflammation in adipose tissue, thus, inducing adiposity. There first study of this virus in adult humans in the United States revealed that about 30% of obese and 11% of non-obese had been infected. Unfortunately, there are still no clinical drugs and vaccines developed up to this date. So the only option you have is to strengthen your immune system because adenovirus is just like any viruses that could infect you if you have a weak immune system. Besides strengthening the immune system, you should also modify your lifestyle despite the fact that our modern lifestyle is the primary culprit to obesity. It's important to talk to your doctor or other professional before beginning any sort of supplementation or treatments.
