In 1996, Michael Jackson decided he wanted to film his music video for “They Don’t Care About Us” in a Brazilian slum in Rio de Janeiro. Director Spike Lee, on behalf of Jackson, went to talk to a local drug kingpin called Márcio Amaro de Oliveira. De Oliveira controlled the slum, and police did not dare to enter it. He was all powerful within it.
As it turns out, the Brazilian drug baron was a MAJOR fan of Michael Jackson fan.[1] He reportedly got all local criminals in line just for the video. He gave the following message to Lee:

“With Michael Jackson here, this slum will be the safest place in the world. You can leave one million dollars out in the streets. Leave your filming equipment out in the open. And not one soul will so much as touch it.”

And that is exactly what happened. The music video was filmed without any issues. The production was entirely safe… and this is remarkable because it was filmed in one of the most unsafe areas of the world. An area where a lost tourist would quickly lose everything he owns, if not his life…

That’s the power of being a global superstar of Michael Jackson’s stature — you have fans, everywhere. Even in the most unlikely of places. And conveniently, one of them happened to be a major Brazilian drug lord.
