The English word 'disciple' comes from the Latin 'discipulus' which means a student or a learner, or a follower. The first use of it is in the New Testament use of a disciple of Jesus, one of the people who followed Jesus. And the root of the word in Latin is 'disco', which doesn't mean the same as it does in the English. 'Disco' means 'to learn from' from which we have the two nouns 'disciple' and 'discipline'.
