the Black death and Cosmic chaos

Thomas Short wrote that up to eighty percent of the European population perished during the Black death of the fourteenth Century. It was also accompanied by drought, geophysical dramas and chaotic weather. It is clearly recorded in texts of the time which were careful to record the Cosmic dramas . What were the causes and how do we explain the catastrophic death toll nowhere nearly matched by modern examples?
