Richard Nixon served as the 37th President of the United States from 1969 to 1974. His presidency was overshadowed by the Watergate scandal, a political scandal that arose from the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters during the 1972 presidential campaign. Nixon's involvement in the cover-up ultimately led to his resignation in 1974, making him the first U.S. president to resign from office. Despite his accomplishments in foreign policy, including the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT), the Watergate scandal tarnished Nixon's legacy and remains a significant chapter in American history. After leaving office, Nixon lived in relative seclusion until his death in 1994 at the age of 81.
