On November 12, 2023, Okaloosa County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a disturbance involving a honking vehicle around 8:42 a.m. They detained Marquis Jackson, accused of grand theft auto and threats. During Deputy Jesse Hernandez's search, a startling pop made him believe he was shot. Chaos ensued with gunfire from Hernandez and Sergeant Beth Roberts. The intense incident, triggered by a misunderstood acorn sound, led to Deputy Hernandez's resignation for policy violation. No injuries occurred, and no weapon was found. The OCSO labeled this incident as an educational case surrounding the acorn misunderstanding.
