How we elect a U.S. President

Every four years, the United States goes through the ritual of electing a President. I use the term ritual for two reasons. First, most Americans’ understanding of the election process is based on customs or rites rather than the law. If I could go back in time and explain to those visiting teammates how our presidential elections work, I would focus on three points.

1- The political parties choose their candidates through a combination of primaries, caucuses, and internal negotiations.
2 - The states elect the President based on the advice of their citizens.
3 - The vast majority of the American people are unaware of points 1 and 2.
