If this budget is the best the Tories can do, just call the election!

Jeremy Hunt's hopefully final budget put the con into Conservatives, as it promised little and offered even less.
Right, so Jeremy Hunt has just given his budget and quite honestly if you missed it you didn’t miss much. Over an hour he spoke for and for the most part it was microeconomic tinkering and nothing that overtly effected ordinary working class people wanting to see if there were some pre election sweeteners coming. Well what he did put forward was a bit of a damp squib, amounting to some £6bn a year in bonuses, but other things he’s tried to sell us, like non dom status abolition, well that was a bit of a con.
Right, so a quick budget rundown, there will be a lot of these vids around today I’m sure, but of what was actually relevant to us in our ordinary everyday lives, there was little to cheer and a lot of putting the Con into Conservatives.
For an hour he spoke and actually it amounted to very little, in fact it probably took as long as it did, because Hunt filled his speech out with a swipe at Labour seemingly every two minutes to the point I was shouting at the telly to just bloody get on with it.
Opposition benches got away with a lot of heckling too, it was one of the more disruptive budgets I can remember watching, and it really was thin gruel.
The big policy, if you can call it that, was the cut to National Insurance we already knew was coming, in fact the Tories first positied this in January and it elicited not so much as a ripple in their polling, yet this remained the big one in this budget, the saving the best for last moment, and we already knew about it. With so much talk of tax cuts from the Tories this was basically it, 2% off employees National Insurance dropping from 10% to 8% and for the self employed it is dropping from 8% to 6% on earnings over the tax threshold of £12,570. Obviously it depends on how much you earn, because this is a percentage, as to how much you save and as always it is a giveaway most of all to the biggest earners, an MP gains £750 a year, a newly qualified nurse, just £250 and if you’re on such low wages that you don’t pay tax or national insurance this does absolutely nothing for you. The Tories deservedly got nowhere politically with this announcement before and they won’t now.
Right, so now I’m left with what else to talk about frankly! The inequality of high earners and child benefit. Hunt decided to deal with this. If you’re not aware of the issue, anyone earning over £50,000 isn’t eligible for it, but if a couple earning just under £50,000 each, nigh on £100,000 between them, they could still get it. Oh the poor dears, however do they get by? Well Hunt is going to make tax changes to address this situation, but it’ll take until 2026 apparently to do, so meanwhile he raised the threshold of earnings to £60,000 to qualify for it. Big bloody deal to all of us.
So what else? What else indeed! £5m to do up our village halls, well I’m sure that’ll help us keep the lights on and food in our bellies.
