The law firm Jones Day was paid nearly 600-thousand-dollars to investigate if anyone had leaked Brenda Tracy's name to reporters after she filed a sexual harassment complaint against him in December 2022 and did not intend to make her case public. Her attorney says an outside source leaked her name and the university's investigation found it was not an MSU trustee, official, or employee. A second law firm billed MSU 250-thousand-dollars to represent Trustee Rema Vassar.
